Tuesday was marked by Congressman George Whitesides awarding organization President Juan Blanco the National Defense Service Medal accompanied by Army parachutist badge (Jump Wings) and rifle qualification badge (Marksman).

During the Vietnam War Era troops were often summarily informed “You are now authorized to wear the National Defense service ribbon” by your Drill Sergeant or some ranking officer and that was it. No medal in a box or awarded officially.

Troops referred to the NDSM in G.I. humor as the “Fire Watch” ribbon But that was not inaccurate. It meant you took the oath to the Constitution during wartime, would willingly serve anywhere and in a literal way were on “fire watch” in defense of our nation.

Christine Ward, veterans advocate and field deputy for state Sen. Suzette Valladares did the file work to ensure Blanco’s service to nation was recognized. More than 50 years after service. But 8th Infantry Division (Airborne) veteran Blanco looked as pleased and grateful as if he were on the parade field at Bad Kreuznach Division HQ.

Purists do not be concerned on the badge placement. They all made it onto documented Paratrooper Blanco’s polo shirt, which accurately reflects his service as the title he is proud to claim, U.S. Army Paratrooper. Airborne All the Way.
